Orestis Kalambalikis, award-winning guitarist and composer, proposes a program for solo guitar centered on the music of Manos Hadjidakis, framed by his own compositions.
The arrangements of Manos Hadjidaki's songs were made by Orestis himself and are dedicated to Elena Papandreou, who performed them on the album "Paper Moon" (2023, BIS Records). For the most part, these are songs for theater or cinema. Many of them were written "purely for livelihood purposes" according to the composer himself, but they became great hits and stood the test of time, significantly influencing the aesthetics of Greek music.
Hadjidaki's music is distinguished by a wonderful and rare quality found in the great composers as well as in traditional music: it manages to be precise without being complicated. Even if the harmonic, counterpoint and orchestral landscape plays an important role in the final result, the melodies remain beautiful and simple, thus being able to stand on their own. That is, they can be sung à capella, played on the piano or guitar and communicate directly with any listener, conveying a lively feeling.
Obviously, one of the main purposes of these arrangements is to bring out the tonal and expressive potential of the instrument, using different tunings and ways of playing.
But these songs were written to support wonderful lyrics, written by Nikos Gatsos, Michalis Bouboulis, Alekos Sakellarios, but also many times by the composer himself. And these lyrics in an instrumental performance are lost. So the deeper goal of these arrangements is to create an atmosphere inspired by the meaning of these lyrics. To make us feel something from the words, even if they are absent.-
The day after his recital, Orestis Kalambalikis will teach a guitar seminar at the Philippos Nakas Concert Hall.
