Internationally acclaimed soprano Eleni Calenos is capturing the admiration of critics and audiences alike for the clarity, warmth and beauty of her voice, and for her dignified characterizations.
To date, her operatic repertoire includes almost 30 roles, most of which she has performed repeatedly.
Roles: Mimi "La Bohème", Cio-Cio San "Madama Butterfly", Tosca, Suor Angelica, Giorgetta "Il Tabarro", Liu "Turandot", Santuzza "Cavalleria Rusticana", Rosalinde “Die FLedermaus”, Donna Anna and Donna Elvira "Don Giovanni", Pamina "Die Zauberflöte", Fiordiliggi "Così fan Tutte", Contessa di Almaviva "Le Nozze di Figaro", Nedda "I Pagliacci", Hanna Glawari "Die lustige Witwe", Antonia "Les Contes D'Hoffmann" , Desdemona "Otello", Medora "Il Corsaro", Gilda "Rigoletto", L'Infante "Le Cid", Silvia "Zanetto", Michela "Carmen", Lia "L'Enfant Prodigue", and Vee Talbot "Orpheus Descending”.
She recently performed the role of Giulietta in Riccardo Zandonai’s “Giulietta e Romeo” with Teatro Grattacielo and the Festival of New York (summer 2022). In the fall of 2021, she created the role of Crise Bozzari in the world premiere of the opera “Marco Bozzari”, by Nikolaos Metaxas Tzanis, with the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra, and participated in the performance project by Marina Abramovic “The Seven Deaths of Maria Callas” with the Greek National Opera. In the fall of 2017 she created the role of Zaida in Søren Nils Eichberg’ s opera "Schönerland" at the Wiesbaden State Theater in Germany.
Ms. Calenos is equally consummate in the oratorio repertoire: Verdi "Requiem", Brahms "German Requiem", Beethoven "Ninth Symphony” and "Misa Solemnis", Handel "Theodora", Mahler "Second Symphony”, Rachmaninov "The Bells ”, Samuel Barber “Knoxville: Summer of 1915 ”, Poulenc“ Gloria ”etc.
She has collaborated with theaters, symphony orchestras and festivals such as: Palm Beach Opera, Glyndebourne (UK), Staatstheater Wiesbaden (Germany), Zomeropera (Belgium), Austin Opera, Tulsa Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, Mississippi opera, Opera Idaho, Opera Delaware, Shreveport Opera, Odyssey Opera, Lancaster Symphony, Mid America Productions (Avery Fisher Hall / Lincoln Center), Utah Opera Festival, Annapolis Opera, Madison Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Glimmerglass, Phoenicia Festival, Evansville Philharmonic Opera, LOFT opera, Teatro Grattacielo, Festival of New York, Greek National Opera, Eptapyrgio Festival, Athens Philharmonia Orchestra, Athens State Orchestra and Thessaloniki State Orchestra.
She has won numerous awards and also has been in the spotlight of international press critics such as: Opera News, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, New Yorker, Houston press etc.
Her recordings include Mascagni's opera “Zanetto” with the Boston Odyssey Opera and George Tsontakis' “Moirologia” with KOCH International Classics. She graduated with a diploma in cello performance from the municipal conservatory of her birthplace Thessaloniki, as well as a diploma in vocal performance from the Greek National Conservatory of Athens. Ms. Calenos received her master's degree in vocal performance from Queens College City University of New York, and was a scholarship recipient of Boston University’s Opera Institute.
