Yannis Papagiannis was born in Athens. After starting with recorder, he studied oboe in the Athens Conservatory with Claude Chieulet and Architecture in the National Polytechnic School. He pursued his studies in the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, Belgium (oboe, English horn and baroque oboe with Paul Dombrecht). During his stay in Belgium he participated in the famous La Petite Bande baroque orchestra in concert tours and recordings under Sigiswald Kuijken and Gustav Leonhardt.

In Greece he has appeared solo with Thessaloniki State Orches-tra and the Camerata Orchestra. He has been Principal Oboe in the Athens Opera Orchestra since 1990 and has taken part in a great number of chamber music concerts. He is co-founder of Sinfonia baroque ensemble. With Maestro George Petrou and baroque orchestras he has taken part in several Handel opera recordings, many of which have received international acclaim.

He teaches oboe and chamber music in the Nakas Conservatory since 1989.
