Tenor Stamatis Beris was born in Athens. He studied singing at the Athens Conservatory under Kiki Morfoniou, as well as at the Greek National Conservatoire under Gogo Georgilopoulou; he also studied economics at the University of Piraeus. On a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation, he continued his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1981 he took part in the competition Luciano Pavarotti in Modena, Italy. He has worked with all the major Greek symphony orchestras, as well as with leading Greek and foreign singers. He has sung, inter alia, in Mikis Theodorakis' works Medea (Bilbao Opera) and Electra (Opéra Luxembourg), as well as in Thanos Mikroutsikos’ opera The return of Helen [I epistrophi tis Elenis] (Athens Concert Hall). He teaches lyric song and post-graduate lyric song at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory. He works with the Greek National Opera since 1979 and is a resident soloist since 1989. He has also served as a GNO associate artistic director (1997-1999) and head of Artistic Activities. He has sung starring and secondary roles in 29 operas and three operettas, in about 60 productions and/or revivals. He has sung, inter alia, in the following works: Il trovatore, La traviata, La bohème, The magic flute [Die zauberflöte], Cavalleria rusticana, Macbeth, The flying Dutchman, Otello, Falstaff, Julius Caesar in Egypt, Un ballo in maschera, Die Fledermaus, as well as in the premieres of Pericles Koukos’ Midsummer Night's Dream and Conroy and his copies. He has been a recording artist (Rhea, Costas Kariotakis, La martyre, Conroy and his copies). He has been awarded distinctions by the municipalities of Athens (1997), Salamis (1998) and Aghia Varvara (1999).
