Dimitris Tzafestas initially studied double bass, then drums, obtaining his diploma from the class of N. Koratzinos at the Athens Conservatory. He participated in tours with the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra and attended master class with S.Gualda. In 1998 he participated in the presentation of Canto General by M. Theodorakis in Limoges, France. From 1985 to 1992 he was a member of the Athens State Orchestra and since 1993 is the drummer of the National Opera Orchestra. He has also participated in numerous performances of the Greek Contemporary Music Group of the Union of Greek Composers. Since 1989 he is professor of percussion at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory.
