Maria Gouvali is a greek composer and saxophonist.

She studied classical saxophone at the Municipal Concervatory of Lamia and received her Diploma (Thanos Fissekis class). She studied composition (Bachelor and Master of Arts in composition Class of prof. Christos Samaras) at the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and a Master of Arts in Composition at Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar (Germany), in the class of the composer prof. Michael Obst.

As a soloist, she has given recitals in important concert halls of Greece. She has attended master classes with distinguished Greek and foreign saxophonists and composers: Jean Marie Londeix, Theodoros Kerkezos, Nikita Zimin, George Portes, Thanassis Zervas, Leo Saguiguit, Eric Honour etc as well as composition masterclasses with Theodoros Antoniou, Nikos Kypourgos, Giorgos Hatzinikos, Vito Žuraj, Clara Iannotta, Elena Firsova, Dmitri Smirnov etc.

As a composer she was commissioned to compose works for the Deutsches Nationaltheater and Staatskapelle Weimar (2017-2018) for the season premieres of ‘’Lulu’’ and ‘’The Marriage of Figaro’’, Bauhaus-Universität and MDR orchestra Leipzig (100 years Bauhaus), El Sistema Greece, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall New York, Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

She has been awarded prizes in several national and international composition competitions for her works.
Her worklist consists of solo works to ensembles and works for orchestra which have been performed by contemporary ensembles in the National Radio of Greece and in concert Halls in Europe.

Since 2009, she is a member of the “European Center for Saxophone Study” in Bordeaux (France) and a jury member of the greek Saxophone Assosiation.

Today, she lives in Thessaloniki (Greece), where she is teaching saxophone and music theory in several music schools and music conservatories and gives also lectures -seminars around composition and contemporary music.
