From controlled to free improvisation, Annual seminar with Alexis Porfyriadis

For the academic year 2024-25, the Philippos Nakas Conservatory organizes an annual improvisation seminar on the theme "From controlled to free improvisation". The seminar is aimed at musicians of all levels and instruments and music teachers, including musicians who work with electronic media.

The first part of the seminar focuses on the practice of controlled improvisation. Participants study and play verbal and graphic scores by historically influential composers such as John Cage, Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Cornelius Cardew, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Anestis Logothetis, Pauline Oliveros as well as more recent compositions by Michael Pisaro, Dubravko Detoni, James Saunders, Carl Bergstroem-Nielsen, Alexis Porfiriadis, Daniel Barbiero, Joseph Kudirka. In the second part of the seminar, we proceed to free improvisation sessions, either with the teacher's instructions, or without any prior consultation between the participants. Alongside these tests, the participants come into contact with the way of thinking of both experimental music composers who used the technique of controlled improvisation and historical groups of free improvisation, such as Musica Eletronica Viva, Nuova Consonanza and AMM. We also discuss with contemporary ensembles such as the experimental music and improvisation groups 6daEXIt Improvisation Ensemble (online meeting from the group's headquarters in Thessaloniki) and WHI ensemble (live meeting).

As part of the seminar, there will be an improvisation masterclass with invited Carl Bergstroem-Nielsen, emeritus professor of therapeutic improvisation at the University of Aalborg/Denmark, on the subject of free improvisation as a basis for team development and a meeting with the Athenian group of improvisation and experimental music WHI ensemble that will improvise with the class and discuss with us their free improvisation practice. In June there will be a concert with controlled improvisation scores as well as free improvisation sessions with the help of the WHI ensemble.
