*The “Seikylos” Quartet by Kostis Demertzis emerged as a musical meditation on the ancient theme, the tomb of Seikilos. This ancient theme was found carved on a stele in a field, in Trallei in Asia Minor, it is a short song and at the same time the only complete piece of music that has reached us from Greek (Hellenistic, in this case) antiquity. Its lyrics are: as long as you live / shine / and do not grieve at all / life is only for a short time / time demands the end. In the course of this musical reasoning, the movement of the music gradually accelerates, until the song becomes a dance. In the Hellenistic space of the poem music and dance always continue, within the eternal light of that other kingdom.
