«FOUR WALLS» Nikos Tsalikis: piano - Vaso Karioti: voice

The work "Four walls"  by John Cage was written in 1944 as the scene music for Merce Cunningham's dance drama of the same name and is the composer's first long-term collaboration with the choreographer. The drama presents a dysfunctional family (weak but loving mother, silent father, rebellious son, daughter with her fiance), is divided into two acts and fourteen scenes and lasts about an hour.
Cage's music incorporates movement and drama, according to his unique vision of modern dance. Duration and rhythm, sounds and silence are the basic elements. Especially about silence he will still have a lot to say, when in 1952 with his work 4'33'' he will shake up the musical establishment and signal a new era for musical composition and perception. In “Four walls” he often uses long pauses (silences) which are not only perfectly measured but contribute to the drama and the development of climaxes. Hence the changes in pitch and tempo, as well as the use of an aeolian mode instead of a major or minor harmony, create a strong psychological background (rare for the composer who generally preferred to have no emotional involvement in his music).
The concert will start with the iconic work 4'33'' and close with the "cinematic" piece "In a landscape".
