Bach Gamba Sonatas BWV 1027-1029

Fabiola Ojeda violoncello piccolo - Despina Homatidou cembalo

The concert with Fabiola Ojeda and Despina Chomatidou, held on Friday 6 May at the Philippos Nakas Concert Hall, was a rare opportunity for Johann Sebastian Bach lovers to enjoy all three sonatas for viola da gamba, performed in five-string baroque cello (violoncello piccolo), an instrument with a "light and nimble" sound, which makes the "heavy and solid" melodies of the modern cello sound imaginative and poetic.

The sonatas were accompanied by music for solo harpsichord by Wilhelm Friedman Bach, the "unpredictable" son with a difficult character, who was unwilling to follow the practices of the time by composing music that was "easy and accessible to many".
